MASTER IN BIOSAFETY BY DISTANCE LEARNING

An international academically accredited course based on a combination of distance-learning and on-campus training sessions. The on-line course is of twelve months duration and leads to an academically accredited Master in Biosafety in the University of Malaya. It is distinctively interdisciplinary with students and faculty from natural & social sciences and the law. The programme is supported through a technical cooperation project under the aegis of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and is endorsed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of Malaysia.

This master course is an upgrade of the previous postgraduate diploma training programme, with hands-on training in the additional module of GMO detection with theoretical and practical aspects. The Malaysian Biosafety Act 2007 and other regional Biosafety Regulations will also be introduced as part of the course material.

At the end of the master programme, successful graduates will be able to conduct risk assessments and apply risk management options. They will have acquired skills to deal with public policy issues at the interface of science, government, industry and civil society. They will also have the analytical knowledge to comply with the regulatory acts in the field of biotechnology. The master programme is targeted at individuals interested in, or are, engaged as biosafety professionals in government agencies or industry. It is also tailored for individuals with an interest in public policy, legal and ethical aspects of biotechnology.
