Location & Communications
The Universidad de Concepción is a private corporation founded in 1919 as a result of an initiative from the local community. It was the third university established in the country and the first one outside Santiago, the capital of Chile, and has become a cultural heritage of the city of Concepción.
Concepción is the capital city of the Bío-Bío Region and is located in the central part of Chile whithin few kilometers from the coast of the Pacific Ocean, some 500 kilometers to the south of Santiago. The city has a modern airport and is connected to Santiago with at least 8 flights daily.
The Region is identified with the Bío-Bío River and is the second most important in the country with a population of nearly 2,000,000 inhabitants and a surface area of 37,000 square kilometers. The climate is characterized by well-defined seasons with a warm summer and a cold winter. The temperatures vary from 0 to 28 ºC throughout the year. This region exports forestry, fishing, steel, petrochemical, manufacturing and agricultural products.
Laboratories
The University has a large number of laboraties and facilities. The Diploma will take part at the Biotechnology Center of the University.
IT connectivity and web-based learning
The University and the Biotechnology Centre have access to state-of-the-art teleconferencing facilities, broad-band internet connections and computer laboratories. Trainees of the Biosafety Diploma will have access to all facilities according to requirements.
Library Facilities
Trainees of the Biosafety Diploma can access UDEC's Central Library. In addition, an electronic library of over 1,000 biosafety-related abstracts and articles will be made available to registered trainees.
Accommodation
The University does not have housing facilities. For the on-campus sessions, there will be a list of several Hotels, where visiting trainees can be accomodated. The University will facilitate hotel reservations as per requirements of registered trainees.
