Research Area: Prof Dr. Yasmin Othman first joined the Department of Genetics and Cellular Biology University of Malaya as a tutor. On completion of her MSc degree she was awarded a Chevening scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in Plant virology at the John Innes Institute of Plant Science. Upon her return she served as lecturer at the Department of Genetics and Cellular Biology. She was appointed Associate Professor at the Institute of Biological Sciences, in 1999 and Professor in 2005. Yasmin Othman was coordinator of the BSc. (Genetics) Undergraduate Program from 2003-2005. She has been awarded a number of traveling and training fellowships and international exchange link grants which gave her the opportunity to work at Cornell University, Scripps Research Institute, Nara Institute of Science and Technology, University of Derby and the University of Leicester. Prof. Othman is a member of the International Banana Genomics consortium. She is an Associate Fellow of the A-IMBN and is also involved in University of Malaya’s Antarctica research programme. She has represented Malaysia at the UNESCO Bioethics meeting and is a member of the UNIDO South-South Biosafety Training Network. She is also a member of the National Genetic Modification advisory council (GMAC). Currently, she heads the Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture at University of Malaya, Malaysia (www.cebar.um.edu.my).
