Registrations for UNIDO e-Biosafety Training Courses for the academic year 2010-2011 open!

For the academic year 2010 -2011 the following courses are offered:

Ghent University
International Postgraduate Course on “Biosafety in Plant Biotechnology” at Gent University (Belgium)

IPBO is organising, in cooperation with UNIDO, a distance learning postgraduate course "Biosafety in Plant Biotechnology" at Gent University for the 5th consecutive academic year.

This international e-course is aimed at training scientists and law specialists in biosafety expertise and evaluation. The course offers a solid basis to be able to set up and implement regulatory biosafety frameworks related to plant biotechnology, and to assist in the legislation and interpretation of biosafety risk assessment, and communication to policymakers or the public.

The course is of one year duration with two on-campus training sessions of two weeks duration at the beginning (December 2010) and at the end (June 2011) of the course (tentatively).

The course will start on 01 November 2010.

MPU
First Level Distance Learning Master in Biosafety in Plant Biotechnology at Marche Polytechnic University, Ancona (Italy)

The training programme is targeted at specifically addressed to scientists, trainers, operators and evaluators working mainly in the areas of agronomy, genetics and biotechnology of Genetically Modified Plant (GMP). The aim is to provide theoretical and practical experience and rules on environmental as well as food and feed risk assessment for GMP in different cultivation conditions (mainly Balkans, Mediterranean and African areas).

This international course will have a duration of 46 weeks (322 days) including two on-campus training sessions of one week each at the beginning and at the end of the course.

The course will start on 05 November 2010.

Important information:
All students who
successfully complete the course (either in the study year 2010-2011 or in the years before) will be given the option to register for Master degree ‘Stage 2’ for the academic year 2011-2012. Master degree ‘Stage 2 ‘ involves laboratory and/or desk research.


PUC MINAS
Diploma in Biosafety by distance learning
at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC Minas), Brazil

The course is open to university graduates employed by government regulatory agencies, research institutions and the biotechnology industry or university teachers, social scientists, and other professionals actively involved or interested in public issues in biotechnology. It is desirable to have a degree in Life Sciences. Candidates who do not have such a degree, however, can go through a period of complementary studies in the area, before starting the course.

The programme is designed to have minimal impact on students' on-going professional activities. This course will have a duration of 360 hours over a period of 18 months and comprises distance-learning and two on-campus sessions, to be held in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, of five days each, at the beginning and at the end of the course. The first meeting will be held in November 2010, the other will be announced in due time.

The course will start in early October 2010 and ends in March 2012.

The maximum number of students is 35. Should less than 30 students register, PUC Minas will refund the registration fees.
